Given the tools we have, the answer is keep beating them at the polls until it becomes too costly for them to maintain that attitude.

My experience with talking to some of those people is that no matter how much you try to relate what they are going through to what minorities have to deal with, they refuse to make that last mental jump.

Honest answer? You don’t. In a two person race, the major party nominees are each guaranteed about 40% (+/-3%) of the vote. That’s the floor - that’s what Goldwater got, that’s what McGovern and Mondale got; it’s what Carter got in his re-election bid.

Ideally, you want to get your opponent as close as possible to the 40% number. You do that by three means - first, you try and drive up turnout among your base; second, you try and convince as many people in that 20% that isn’t guaranteed to go to either side that your nominee is the better person to be president; third, you try to expand the electorate. A fourth way to do that is by discouraging your opponent’s supporters to turnout - not necessarily voter suppression in the form of intimidation or making it harder to vote; but sort of convincing them that their guy is going to lose and that your person’s win is inevitable.

Thinking about the news conference yesterday. A good general would have turned the news conference around and pointed out how this indicates further division between Democrats. But Trump could only take it as an attack on him, and he couldn’t let that go. And because of his reactions, it has completely wiped out the story of the split between the young and older Democrats.

I’ve practiced a lot in employment law and as a general rule if you give someone money in exchange for them providing services to your business and your customers, then that is pretty much the definition of a job. Like even calling it a paycheck confirms that it was a job.

Perhaps it’s my general libertarianism, but more and more I’m finding myself unable to trust big businesses (for profit or not). I’ve less trust in institutions than I think I’ve ever had.

I used to trust institutions because I believed that at the end of the day that most of the people who worked within those institutions were (or believed themselves to be) good people who would do the right thing. Now, more often than not, it feels like everyone is just trying to get one over on the next person and that just makes me sad.

I hear ya. I don’t know if socialism is the answer but what passes for capitalism is infuriating to me. Labor should be valued by employers but it’s not and I think that is why socialism has more appeal than ever.

Upton from MI got 50% of the vote in 2018. A squeakers for a rich Whirlpool family member who has been in congress since 1986. He’s all about the tax cuts and vulnerable.

Brooks, from Indiana, won’t care.

“Brooks announced on June 14, 2019 that she will be retiring from Congress at the end of the current session and will not seek re-election. She retained her role as recruitment chairman for the Republican National Congressional Committee for the 2020 election.”

In theory, her district on the north side of Indianapolis should be swingable. In practice, it’s pretty well gerrymandered to stay R.

I wouldn’t call Michigan and Pennsylvania two of Trump’s stronger states. He barely won in each of them in 2016 and his approval in both states is way underwater (-9 in PA, -15 in MI)

Fitzpatrick is in a R+1 district just north of Philadelphia.

Before recent gerrymandering fix in PA Fitzpatrick was in the 8th district and if I recall correctly it was more safely GOP then.
